         Highlighting the historical virtue of women

         For International Women's Day, we would like to highlight the historical achievements of “The Shrouding Women.” According to articles published in the early trade journals, women had the responsibility to care for the body at death, before this duty was transformed into a market activity. Why? Because it fit social roles for women. Data for this research was collected using published diaries, memoirs, and secondary sources that made use of diaries extending as far back as the 18th century.  Some women, up to the late 1800s, were even viewed by their communities to be general caregivers typically performing the laying out of the body at death. A black woman by the name of Willie Mae Cartwright, living in the South in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, called them “shrouding women.” As Cartwright noted, the only people in the community who possessed the knowledge appropriate to tending to the bodies of the deceased were the shrouding women. In effect, the knowledge that the shrouding women possessed allowed them to claim the responsibilities of preparing the bodies of the deceased for burial; furthermore, it allowed them to determine who could and could not undertake these responsibilities. According to The New York Herald “Women as Embalmers” 1899,5; wrote that, during ancient times, most considered the offices connected with the dead to belong to women and not men. It was not until undertaking became an established occupation that the gendered division of responsibilities (women caring for the body, men for the coffin and grave) was crossed and then usually only by men. So, here at MFCS we honor the noble and extraordinary virtue of these courage’s women and thank them for doing it with so much grace.
         &#xD;

          March is women's history month. We would like to salute

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           Henrietta Smith Bowers Dutert. She was born free July 1817, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her family was originally from Baltimore, Maryland. Henrietta married Francis A. Duterte, an undertaker who started his own business in 1852. When her husband died, she took over her husband shop in 1858 and became America's first African-American female undertaker and first female to own a mortuary in the nation, which made her a prominent businesswoman. The Duterte funeral home was located at 838 Lombard Street in Philadelphia.

          Learning about Mrs. Duterte, the fact she was a Woman, and the first ever to own a mortuary in the USA is inspiring. However, it was even more inspiring to know that she was socially active throughout her life by using her business profits to support the African-American community through charitable projects. Also, how she helped to emancipate run away slaves, by being a member of the Underground Railroad. For decades women have been the strongest and most under valued part of history. To know that there was a woman with such a big heart for her community, was savvy, and strong enough to continue such a legacy off of the same career I chose, makes my heart warm and confident that I chose that right path in life.

         Home-going is a traditional African American, Christian funeral practice, it’s long legacy, dates to slavery. During slavery, captives were not allowed to gather to perform any kind of ritual for burying the dead because slave owners were afraid their slaves would incite a riot against them. In 1680, colonial legislators asserted that “the frequent meetings of considerable numbers of Negro slaves under the pretense of…burials is judged dangerous.” And moved to institute a strict pass and patrol system. Laws provided additional clues to mortuary practices and reveal Europeans’ attempt to shape and to control African customs. A 1722 law, for instance, suggests that New York Africans buried their dead at night, a practice that likely reflected the difficulty of finding time during the day to engage in sacred practices. In any case, night burials with their attending “mummeries and outcries” alarmed owners who feared that the potential for conspiracy existed (New York City Common Council 1905:3:296). Hence, the council passed a 1722 law to regulate the burial of “all Negroes and Indian Slaves that shall die within this corporation on the south side of the Fresh Water,” restricting burials to daylight hours (New York City Common Council 1905:3:296).4 A 1731 amendment to the 1722 law conveyed an even more intense fear of conspiracy:
         &#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;i&gt;&#xD;
      
           "For the preventing of great numbers of slaves assembling and meeting together at their Funerals, under pretext whereof they have great opportunities of plotting and confederating together to do mischief, as well as neglecting their Masters Services it was ordered that, if more than twelve slaves assembled at a slave funeral, those present were to be whipped at the discretion of the Mayor, Recorder or one of the Alderman except the 12 slaves admitted by the owner of the dead slave, the gravedigger and the corpse bearers." [New York City Common Council 1905: 4:86–88].
          &#xD;
    &lt;/i&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;i&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/i&gt;&#xD;

          The law forbade the use of “pawls” (palls) and pallbearers at the funerals of enslaved people, possibly because the cloth might be used to hide objects employed for insurrectionary purposes (New York City Common Council 1905:4:86–88). It is no surprise that white New Yorkers sought to control the African population, even in death. In their mortuary practices, New York Africans exhibited unity and humanity; both challenged the legitimacy of slavery and threatened to undermine its very existence.
         &#xD;

  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Even though, it was deemed dangerous for them to hold funerals, some slave owners encouraged their slaves funerals by providing time off from work, some would not let nobody be buried until they had been dead twenty-four hours, and some did provide a respite in the afternoon so that slaves might bury the deceased. However, on the other hand, other plantations did not give them time to mourn, slaves were required to work during the burials of their parents and were required to do other harsh acts to the deceased, instead of burying the deceased. Attacks were also made towards specific African funeral rites, such as the use of African drums to announce funerals and forbidding to sing at slave’s wakes.
         &#xD;

  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

          During the late 18th century until the start of the America Civil war, this period within the Southern parts of the United States is known as Antebellum South (pre-civil war period). Most of the South where the plantations were largest, and the slaves most numerous, they were very fond of burying their dead at night, and as near midnight as possible. This connection of slave funerals with possible insurrection also gave rise to eighteenth century New York City law, which forbade night funerals and limited attendance to ten at slave wakes.  
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Therefore, the careful scrutiny of slave funerals continued into the national period and was sharpened in 1800 by Gabriel’s Rebellion near Richmond, which arose in part out of a meeting held at a funeral ceremony.  It was custom among the captives to look at death as freedom from the harsh oppression they endured. So, celebration became a reason to gather and rejoice for the deceased’s soul because they also believed that the soul would return back to Africa. From this arrived the word Home-going.

         Martin Luther King Jr. asked us:

           "What Are We Doing For Others?"
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
           In his work he showed, with his actions how he helped those who needed him the most. The phenomenal poet and civil rights activist, Maya Angelou stated:
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          "When a person shows you who they are, believe them."
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          These two resilient souls have ensured us that its your actions that speak the loudest. We thank God for sharing them with us and leaving behind such a powerful message that we all can grow from.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968. King was laid to rest at South-View Cemetery before being moved to the Martin Luther King Center and Morehouse College. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          May the actions that he graced us with continue to leave a footprint on every generations heart.

         After death, the body undergoes Cadaveric spasm movements. These movements are expected in early stages of a corpse. Some of the factors that cause the movements are, geographical locations where the body was found, seasons, and fat content, etc. There are also factors that speed up the rate of post-mortem changes, such as, open injuries or infections and hot or humid weather, etc. However, according to some new research it has been discovered that, the corpse still moves after it is buried for more than a year.  After using time-lapse cameras to film decomposing corpses for 30 minutes during the day. Researchers at an Australian Facility for Taphonomic Experimental Research (AFTER), discovered the entire time, the body continued to move.            Do African American graveyards deserve the same respect as other graveyards?  Finding out most of African American burial grounds are historic burial grounds, that are not receiving the same respect, as other burial grounds, is shocking. Burial grounds are often found incidentally by developers under parks and office buildings, however, many of the sites, become oral history with no source of documentation. "Burial grounds are important resources. They can serve as road maps for genealogical and historical research," says Sandra A. Arnold, founder of "Periwinkle Initiative." Arnold is working to create an open-source National Burial Database of Enslaved Americans. So far, Arnold has gathered information on approximately 450 cemeteries and 12,000 gravesites, and issued a report that includes preservation case studies and a list of documented sites.  
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    
          According to Lynn Rainville, who is an anthropology professor, who studies African American cemeteries, and is a director of the institutional history at Virginia's Washington and Lee University, here's what she had to say:
         &#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    
          “Historic African American burial grounds have been overlooked, vandalized, bodies have been robbed out of graves, for medical cadavers, and then built upon across the country, in the North and the South,” Rainville said. “It is not just a Southern issue. It is directly connected to the residue of racism in the past and in the present.” 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    
          On the website of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, public historian Nadia Orton reflects and said:
         &#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    
          "African-American cemeteries have been abandoned for the same reasons as many other historic cemeteries, including severed family connections coupled with a lack of provision for long-term maintenance. As a cemetery fills up, profits decrease, and it becomes too expensive to maintain. Overgrowth sets in, and the cemetery becomes impassable. Gravestones are broken by tree roots or covered by bushes, leaves, and tree limbs. But other causes are specific to African-American burial grounds and cemeteries — the ramifications of slavery and of the structural racism that persists in the United States."
         &#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    
          As Raphael Morris, historian and president of, Greenwood Cemetery Preservation Association, has said: "It’s a history that reflects the fact that the racism and inequality that plague African Americans in life are perpetuated in death." 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    
          Being that burial grounds are often found by developers under parks and office buildings,there is sometimes an expensive amount that needs to be paid when construction is asked to be stopped. Donald Joralemon, author of, "Mortal Dilemmas: The Troubled Landscape of Death in America," raises a question: "How do you place a price on history?"
         &#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    
          Therefore, because of the light that has been shed on this topic over the years, Washington D.C. has taken notice to the conversation, which has caused a new legislation to be proposed in Congress. Representatives Alma Adams and A. Donald McEachin created, "The African American Burial Ground Network Act."  This bill directs the Department of the Interior to establish, "The U.S. African-American Burial Grounds Network," within the National Park Service (NPS). The legislation creates a voluntary national network of historic African American burial grounds, and would provide information, technical support, and grants to aid in the research, identification, preservation, and restoration of burial sites within the network. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
